vintage 1960s brown alligator handbag Mayer New York gator bag purse
Beautiful brown alligator handbag by Mayer of New York, circa early 1960s vintage.
Fixed short strap length, hinged gold tone metal closure with roll- top bar covered in matching alligator, gold latch at center.
Generous size and width, with unusual curbed bottom corners.
Really well matched skins have a wonderful sheen and depth.
Underside of strap and interior of bag are caramel leatherette. Interior has several small pockets, a "Mayer New York" label, and a "Best & Co, Fifth Ave, New York" label.
Condition is good to very good overall- strap is solidly attached with minimal wear. Some edge wear to the higher points of the hides, some rubbed wear to the corners and bottom panel. If looking at the front of the bag, there is a partially worn through scale edge on the right lower side- see photos.Otherwise holding solid and not on a stress point- I foresee no future issues with this but it is worth noting- bag is priced accordingly.
A classic and lovely Mid- Century alligator handbag- this will never go out of style!
9- 1/2" across the top roll bar edge, 10- 1/2" across the lower body
7- 5/8" high (excluding strap)
3" deep (at bottom)
strap adds 4- 1/2" in height, approximately 16" in length with a 1" drop down per side
